The Basics of Blackjack

Blackjack is a popular casino or card game. It is also knows as Pontoon or twenty-one. This is one of the most popular card games in the world. The game's popularity could be attributed to the element of chance and skill which a player should have in playing and winning. The Blackjack we know today was the descendant of the game known as "vingt-et-un" or twenty one which started in French casinos in the 17th century.

Blackjack was then introduced in the United States. Back then it wasn't even popular so the gambling houses tried to offer different bonuses to get players gambling to the table. An example of the bonus was the 10-to-1 payout only if the player's hand would have the black Jack and the ace of spades. This kind was called the "blackjack" and since then the name stuck to the game although the bonus payout was abolished soon enough. Today the game as currently played may not contain a jack at all. It is not necessary anymore.

The Rules of Blackjack

The hands are scored through the total points earned. The player with the hand which has the highest total wins as long as it will not exceed 21. The hand with the total value higher than twenty one is termed a bust. The cards with the values of two until ten have their face value. The jack, queen and king are worth 10. The value of the ace is eleven unless it would cause the player to bust then the value would be one. Soft hand is the hand in which the worth is counted as eleven because it will not be busted if the card holder draws another card.

The aim of each player is to be able to strike the dealer out. This can be done by maintaining a hand with no bust at all. The game of Blackjack is advantageous to the dealers so the players should never forget that if they bust they will consequently lose, even if the dealer also gets another bust. A "push" happens when the dealer and the player have the same point value and in this case neither the player nor the dealer wins that hand. It is possible that the dealer will lose to a player but can still beat the other players in the table and in the same round because each player has an independent game. The bets vary from casino to casino. The minimum stake is printed on a sign on the table. The bets also vary table to table.
